Historical Sites in Philadelphia

Founded in 1681, Philadelphia is one of the oldest cities in the United States. Although it's changed a lot over the past 340 years, some of the city's original places still stand today. Here's our list of historical sites you can't miss near our waterfront apartments in Philadelphia.

The Liberty Bell

Citizens first hung the Liberty Bell in Independence Hall in 1753. Unfortunately, it cracked upon first use, so it had to be repaired. Thinking the repair was successful, they rang the bell for George Washington's birthday celebration only for it to break again. Sadly, that was the final ring. The bell has stayed silent since.

The Liberty Bell still stands today in Independence Hall for everyone to admire.

The Benjamin Franklin Gravesite

Benjamin Franklin, born in 1706, was one of the original founding fathers of our nation. He was highly influential. Not only was he an inventor, but he also signed the original Declaration of Independence. After he died in 1790, he was buried at Christ Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

His tombstone at his gravesite remains intact and is open to the public today.

Betsy Ross House

Legend has it that Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag. She was said to sew many flags throughout the Revolutionary War. Reportedly, Betsy Ross lived at the house on Arch Street from 1776-1779 and that’s where she sewed the famous first American flag.

The house, built over 250 years ago, still stands today and is open to the public.

These top historical sites in Philadelphia are sure to delight. Before your history tour, check out these museums on your way. If you would like a tour of our 1 Brown luxury apartments in Northern Liberties, please contact us.
